  That did it. No more regex. It appears to be highly thread-unsafe.
  
  Sorry, I guess my environment did not have enough traffic to test this
  feature. I've added another user to the mix, and must have stepped above
  some usage threshold to reveal this weakness.
  
  I wrote routines to replace all remaining usages of do_regex. It seems
  OK, and a week or two of site testing hopefully will reveal any problems.
